Distinguished and Famous people from McKinlay

🧭 Donald and Duncan McIntyre

Donald McIntyre established a pastoral base at Dalgonally waterhole in the 1860s, an important episode in the district’s colonial station history. His brother Duncan became involved in the search for the missing explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. A monument near the Gilliat River commemorates the brothers, connecting those biographies with a particular location in the shire. Their story belongs to the expansion of pastoral occupation and exploratory journeys across country already known and occupied by Aboriginal people. The surviving commemoration brings the local station history and the much wider mystery of Leichhardt’s disappearance together.

🏛️ W. M. Allison

W. M. Allison joined the shire council in 1914 and became chairman the following year, holding that position for thirty-seven years. Council’s historical account identifies him as its longest-serving chairman. His tenure spanned major changes in the way the district was administered, including the movement of council’s base to Julia Creek. Such continuity is a notable form of local influence: roads, services and the practical demands of a widely spread population occupied council long after individual meetings were forgotten.

🤝 George Pont

George Pont worked as an Australian Workers’ Union organiser at Julia Creek in 1942, between appointments at Mackay and Longreach. His own working life had included truck driving, wool pressing and mining, giving him practical experience of the conditions he later negotiated over. He eventually became an industrial commissioner and made a significant 1967 award ending discriminatory pay and conditions for Aboriginal station hands in Queensland. Pont generally preferred arbitration to direct action and insisted that awards be observed by workers and employers alike. Julia Creek was one of the country postings behind that long career in industrial relations.
